An informal presentation on the art and science of classical dancing, a lecture/demonstration is a fun and accessible introduction to ballet. Specific exercises that develop jumping, turning, partnering, lifting and dancing on pointe are demonstrated and explained. An audience participation segment in which members of the audience are invited to the stage to try some of the movements, or test the similarities between social dance and ballet is included. Throughout, excerpts from Dance Theatre of Harlem’s repertoire demonstrated how the elements that have been discussed come together to create the magic of dance.
